Coalition Building -
I was the Chair of a state-funded
coalition of community tobacco control organizations in Los Angeles county that
established benchmark tobacco policies to prohibit smoking in public areas,
eliminated tobacco billboard advertising, creating vendor assisted sales by
eliminating free-standing floor displays of cigarettes, and reduced availability
to minors. The coalition grew to include private sector, government, and
non-profit organization participation.
I also help establish and participated
in the growth of local coalitions in Los Angeles County focused on the public
health community’s response to the growing tide of obesity in children and
adults of low SES and at-risk minority families.
Strategic Planning-
Rallied the L.A. County Tobacco Control
Coalition to make a significant impact to the 2000 Democratic Party National
Convention in Los Angeles as the first tobacco-free presidential nominating
convention of a national political party in our nation’s history. Strategically
coordinated the tobacco control community’s efforts in Los Angeles County and in
Ventura County to win much-needed program funding from the Tobacco Settlement
Agreement money appropriated by their County’s Board of Supervisors.
Communications-
Sent out Action Alerts on public health
policy issues and activities that needed to be addressed immediately by our
community’s health coalitions. Contributed with presentations at press
conferences and media events that informed the public and press about the most
important issues of the day facing and affecting the public’s health and
well-being.
Leadership –
Brought together non-profit health and
community public health coalitions together with business organizations and
other private sector entities which advocated and supported cutting-edge public
health policy issues and legislation for tobacco control in Los Angeles,
California, and the United States.
Advocacy –
Selected as one of 15, from a national
pool of applicants, to attend the Leadership Fellows Program at the Advocacy
Institute in Washington, D.C. Recognized as a leader in public health policy
advocacy and accomplished strategist in environmental and culture change. Helped
to pass various public health ordinances, legislation, and program funding have
been put in place through my personal relationships with elected members of the
Los Angeles City Council and Mayor, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors,
the California State Legislature, and Members of Congress from Los Angeles
County and Southern California.
Public Speaking –
I have been a Facilitator of panel
sessions and discussions at public health forums; presented advocacy and
strategic planning abstracts at national conferences; and a keynote speaker at
state conferences for tobacco control and obesity. I have also been the guest
speaker at many local non-profit and public health organization board meetings
and conferences.
Media Relations –
Wrote press releases for media and press
events held to promote and publicize important issues in public health issues.
I have been interviewed and featured in TV, radio, and print news stories that
informed the public about advances in tobacco control and other public health
policies.
Grassroots Mobilization –
Built up and even doubled the numbers of
volunteers willing to help support the advocacy efforts for public health policy
issues. I’ve mobilized these passionate advocates to email, call, and write
members of the state legislature, United States Congress, local government
officials, and school board members for the issues important to the American
Heart Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, and for issues important to our
sustained efforts in tobacco control and obesity .
Special Events Planning –
Coordinated community 5K and 10K walks
and formal dinners that were fundraisers for the American Heart Association.
Participated in the planning and coordination of putting together press and
media events for promotion of public health issues.
Educator / Facilitator –
Taught a public advocacy class at the
CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control) Leadership Forum for Tobacco Control
Professionals in Scottsdale, AZ. Led annual strategic planning retreat for Fit
WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Task Force made up of Managed Care
Executive’s, government leaders, and public health organization executives.
Project Management –
As the Director of Public Advocacy for the
American Heart Association, I led the City of Los Angeles to adopt a Public
Access to Defibrillation program that placed life-saving defibrillators in
strategic locations and at public venues that included government buildings,
convention centers, stadiums, airports, and public sporting facilities.
According to USA Today, this project was one the first in the nation and
designated Los Angeles one of the safest cities in America.
